A SUGGESTION TO THE SHS GRADUATES

WASSCE is one of the biggest hurdles in our educational system. It grants or denies you the permission to continue to a Tertiary institution after Senior High School. Which is a big deal for most people. There's a lot of prestige in being able to make it into a Tertiary institution though of late graduate unemployment is gradually changing the narrative. So being able to sail through WASSCE successfully whether you made it once or after several attempts should be a feat you should hold in high esteem. It not easy for many. We all know how frustrating it can be.

With that said, this piece focuses on the period after WASSCE till you get admissions into your institutions of choice. It usually takes about a year for the transition from SHS to the Tertiary institutions. What do you do with that time? For many, it is just a free period with nothing much to do - just sleeping, eating and 'shitting' . Only a select few are able to use this period very productively. How do you make maximum use of this free period?

To those who belong to the "eat, sleep, shit" category, you have to understand that time is of essence. The clock is ticking, it ain't gonna wait for you. Eating and sleeping won't get you to your goals. You have to understand that there's a price to pay in order to achieve your goals. Of course, this price comes in different shapes and forms but self/personal development is pivotal. The earlier you start, the better.

My dear SHS graduates who don't have the slightest idea of what they are going to with this free period, my first suggestion to you is to read, read and read. This is the time for you to read. Spend considerable amount of time reading. You have the opportunity to read at your own pace, no pressure and no thought of examination. You have a lot of options to choose from when it comes to what to read but for the fact that you're transitioning in to the Tertiary level, I suggest you read articles and books centered around career choices and opportunities because most often than not the courses we pursue at the Tertiary institutions eventually becomes our professions or careers. Do extensive research on the course you want to pursue and make sure you're right for it. A wrong choice of course of study can ruin your life - be careful. The system is very fragile.

My second suggestion to you is to find an ICT center and enroll. It is a great idea when you look at it critically. Information Technology is taking over, having a considerable knowledge about it will boost your credentials. It is a good idea even if you're already conversant with I.T, having a certificate in some selected areas won't be bad especially if you compare it with doing nothing. Besides, you will need it a lot in the Tertiary level. There are a lot you can do with this free period but I would recommend taking a course at an ICT center. If you can't afford it, please learn from family and friends who are good at it. Believe me, I know many people in the university who not know how to save a word document, don't let it be you. It usually takes three months to finish and get a certificate. I was lucky: had the opportunity to attend a computer school when I was in primary six and it has helped me a lot. You just need the basis, from there you can learn on your own.

In a nutshell, read read and read. Also ask to be enrolled in one of those ICT centers, in fact it will show your parents/guardian how serious a student you're and that comes with some benefits. Yeah, there are benefits of being a serious student. Anyways, these are just a suggestions but remember, you're the elevator to your success.
Thank you.

UDS: INCREMENT IN SCHOOL FEES IS THE LEAST OF OUR PROBLEMS

Fellow developers, don't let the headlines get into your head. Take your time and analyze the issues. I hope I'm not too late in the "increment in school fees" discourse. Sadly, my immune system was compromised but thankfully, I'm now comfortably soothing in the bosom of good health.

Let me put it on record, I have no shred of doubt that our student leaders will be able to handle this matter to the best of their abilities though their best might not be best for the majority of students - history has my back on this, sadly.

Let me wage in. To the real issues, let's for just a minute assume that the fees we have been asked to pay is justifiable. Let us for a minute assume that there's nothing wrong with the fees, nothing fishy is going on and that we truly deserve to pay those amounts. What then? What are we going to do if all negotiations and demonstrations (as many have suggested) prove futile? Are we only just asking for our fees to be reduced? The public outcry is loud enough but we need to ask the right questions perhaps it will trigger the right solutions. Whether it is increased or reduced, how do we make sure that the monies we pay are used for its intended purposes so that we don't end up using SRC dues to shoulder the responsibilities of the school management - isn't that what we have been doing? Don't you think that should be our concern? Enough with the rhetorics, let me submit my suggestions.

SUGGESTION NUMERU UNO
I have heard whispers that SRC will meet the administration. I don't know what they are going to do. If the Administration can increase fees without the consent of SRC, then I wonder the importance of the latter. Well, this buttresses the fact that "fee negotiations" is nothing but a hoax. Anyways, there's no harm in making suggestions.
My dear SRC, please seek clarification for us. We need transparency and effective communication on this matter. There's no effect without cause. Why the increment? - please find out for us. I'm sure that's exactly what you're going to do but I just have to put it on record.

SUGGESTION NUMBER TWO
Whether the fees is reduced or maintained, please demand that the components or breakdown of the fees be published on the school's website or any other means that will make it VERY accessible. That document shouldn't be something one has to suffer to get. Make sure that the document is very accessible and not that unnecessary bureaucracy they have kept in place. UDS is a service provider and we're its customers, I think we deserve to know what we're paying for. School fees comprises of so many components. We deserve to know "how much" we are paying for "what". If I know what I'm paying for, I will know what to demand for. The breakdown of the fees will make it easy for SRC to explain and even make it more easier for students to understand. These are my views.
Thank you.

JUST WONDERING

😢😢
I'm just wondering, why do you want people to humiliate themselves before you help them? What really does that add to you? I'm tempted to believe that the only worth some people have is when people seek help from them and for that matter anything they will do to make sure you keep asking will be done. That's perhaps the reason why most people will never help you pay your wards school fees but will gladly sponsor your naming ceremony. Is a pity.

Sadly too, there exist another group of people. This particular group of people, I have never wished to encounter in my life. These people in the event of you seeking help from them results in only two outcomes. One, they either help you and "sell you out"  or two, they don't help you at all but still sells you out. We all know or have heard of such people. Perhaps you're one of those people. Anyways, for me, none of these outcomes is appropriate. If you can't/won't help, don't let the problem I shared with you in secrecy become breaking news. I'm just wondering, what at all do people stand to gain by broadcasting the weakness of others? I'm still trying very hard to figure out why people do this. If you won't help a brother, don't sell him out. Why sell him out? The world will be a better place to live if the rich will realize that the Almighty has placed the sustenance of others in their hands. Perhaps this realization will help them act accordingly. May Allah provide for us all.

HELLO MAY

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to celebrate our gallant workers. I'm extremely grateful for the opportunity to congratulate the men and women who day in day out are working tirelessly to build our dear nation. We appreciate your hard work, your sacrifice and your contribution to the development of our country. M bo!!
There is a particular group of workers I can't thank enough. This group of workers deserve a standing ovation from every living soul. They work without pay. Their efforts cannot be quantified in monetary terms. Sacrifice and unconditional love is their motto. I'm talking about mothers. Not only those who have been blessed with the fruit of the womb but every woman who has once upon a time assumed the office of motherhood. If forget the word "mothers", you can call them "workers" .
Every manager has ever been managed by a mother and every worker has been worked on by a mother. Can we pay them? I don't think so. Their efforts will be rewarded by the Almighty.
I'm throwing a challenge to every son and daughter, let's make our mothers proud.!!

IN ESSENCE

We fall sick to appreciate being healthy
We become hungry, to appreciate being full
crying makes us appreciate laughter
We feel sad to appreciate being happy
We fail, so that we can appreciate the value of success.

There's no day if there is no night
There's no darkness If there's no light.
In essence, the duality of life is a phenomenon that should induce a sense of gratitude in every living soul.
Embrace every moment of the journey of life
And be thankful to Allah for Everything.

THE PROPOSED MELSSA HANDING OVER CEREMONY IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL

Matters of constitutionality and legality cannot be discussed without reference to a constitution. I will make reference to the UDS MELSSA CONSTITUTION as I advance my argument.

On Friday, March 3, 2017, the General Assembly of MELSSA constituted a 5-member Audit committee to audit the account(s)  of MELSSA and to report to the House in accordance with article 6(i)(a), 6(i)(c), and 12(ii)(c) of the Constitution. The Committee had its first meeting on March 4, 2017 and later submitted its budget to the outgoing MELSSA EXECUTIVES but that budget has not been granted. Notwithstanding that, the Committee diligently continued its work. The committee sent invitation letters to the outgoing Executives (thus the president, Financial Secretary, Health Officer and PRO) inviting them to a meeting in order for them to to give clarifications to some parts of the financial statements but none except the PRO turned up.

It is worth noting that, It is the responsibility of the out going administration to cooperate fully with the Audit committee in order ensure a smooth transition of government. The outgoing president and his executives are supposed help the Audit committee by giving them all the necessary information in order for them to carry out their duty as mandated by the Constitution. This has not been done. Why?

From my checks, the Audit committee Chair wrote to the outgoing president on March 28, 2017, requesting for a General Assembly meeting  to enable the committee inform the House about its findings (which is very constitutional) but the president disabused the idea. I was therefore surprising and worrying to see a circular informing students of a handing over ceremony to be held on the 31st of March, 2017, when the Audit Committee have not completed their work. And from the information I gathered, the Executives elect were not even informed before that circular was released.

I believe this is a deliberate constitutional error and a clear violation of the very constitution the president swore an oath to defend. With no malice intended, I draw inspiration from the oath of allegiance I took as a General Assembly member of UDS MELSSA to defend the Constitution at all times.

It is very important for us to understand that the Audit committee in this particular instance is a similitude of a transition team though it is independent. It is supposed to know how much the Association has in it coffers, the assets the Association has acquired and how much they spent in doing so and to provide answers to questions in the financial statements. How can you hand over, If such important details have not been provided?  What then are you handing over?

With reference to the following provisions of the UDS MELSSA CONSTITUTION

"ARTICLE
12(i) An Audit Committee shall audit the Association's Accounts each administrative year before the handing over ceremony.

12(ii)b. The Audit committee shall present its report at least two (2) weeks before the Handing over ceremony.

c. The Audit committee shall report directly to the General Assembly.
d. The Audit committee shall be responsible to the Senate

e. Copies of the Audit report shall be made available on the notice board and to the various classes at least ten (10) days before a General Assembly meeting is specifically called for a formal presentation by the Audit Committee, deliberation and subsequent acceptance or rejection by the General Assembly"

....it is obvious that the proposed Handing over ceremony is in clear violation of the Constitution and therefore unlawful. ( I'm not a judge though..)

My suggestion is that the proposed handing ceremony be postponed or a General Assembly meeting be convened today (30th, March, 17) to discuss the Audit Committee findings before the handing over ceremony comes off on the 31th of March, 17.
Thank you!!

I DIDN'T LOSE, I LEARNT

Indeed, this will go down history as one of the most keenly contested elections in MELSSA. The electioneering period was an interesting and wonderful one. I enjoyed every bit of the process. In life, some times we win, other times we learn. I believe this election was a learning experience for some of us. At the end of the day, I believe every contestant has become a better person.

First of all, I want to thank the Almighty Allah for bringing this electioneering process to a successful end. I would also thank each and every one who came out to vote for me. May the almighty bless you all. Special thanks also goes to Mohammed Adam and Hebatullah Haroon for their undying love and support. I'm highly grateful. And to every one who in diverse ways supported me, may the good Lord bless us all.

I will not hesitate but to congratulate all the elected executives of MELSSA. My heartfelt congratulations goes to Hon AWUNI on his election as the president of MELSSA. Special congratulations to my assistant Course rep for being elected as the vice president of MELSSA. She worked tirelessly and the good lord crowned her efforts with victory. She won against all odds. No one deserves it better than her. In fact, Barnie you're a heroine. Congratulations to all the other Executives who were elected. May you all work for the "greaterment" and betterment of MELSSA.

As I always say, the development of MELSSA is our collective responsibility. Let's all rally behind the executives to move MELSSA to greater heights. All hands on deck. At the end of the day, I believe MELSSA won and the will of Allah prevailed.

Thanks you all for voting!!

Long live UDS
Long live GHANA.

NO SOUVENIRS, NO ELECTION

For far too long, we the students of the University For Development Studies have been taken for granted, we have been disrespected, we have been deceived and we have not been given what is due us as students. We have leaders but we lack leadership. We have bootlickers as leaders. Leaders without 'balls'. Our leaders are not serving our interests. There's so much uselessness and insanity in the system. Simple, simple issues cannot be solved. It is so pathetic. But I believe there's hope. I can see a wind of monumental change blowing through the political scene on campus. A wind of resistance, a wind of hope and an awareness of our importance as students. As I always say, we as students are the most important part of this institution and the moment we begin to behave as such, the sooner our problems will be solved.

It is on this very note that I declare my support for the on going crusade the level 100s are currently manning. They have decided to boycott the impending SRC/NUGS elections and all matters relating to it until the souvenirs they PAID for in CASH are provided. So right now, no 'candidate' ('candidates' vying for SRC/NUGS portfolios) is allowed to campaign in any of the level 100 classes.  Not only that, they are pursuing other channels like petitioning the SRC President and considering other legal actions in an effort to be given what they dully deserve. Eighty-five cedis per head is not a joke and more to the point, these monies were paid directly to the SRC, so the usual bureaucracy in getting funds from the Administration is not in play. So what then is the problem now? Mr SRC President, why haven't you provided the level 100s the souvenirs they paid for? Hmm, in fact, I cannot hide my joy. I'm very happy such a thing is happening on this campus, it means students are showing interest in how they are governed. I must say that #Nosouvinirsnoelection is a legitimate course and I am totally in support of it. It is high time we stand and fight for our rights. No more apathy. We shall no Longer sit and fold our arms. We are ever ready to hold our leaders accountable. The nonsense is too much. I therefore appeal to all the student body and more especially the level 100s, to fully support this course. Let us unite and fight for our rights. We deserve better.

#Nosouvinirsnoelection is a worthy course to support!!
Thank you.!!

THE OUTRAGEOUS COST OF THE SRC/NUGS NOMINATION FORMS

Information reaching me from a reliable source indicates that the prices allotted to the various nomination forms of the various SRC/NUGS portfolios have not been approved by the  General Assembly. What it therefore means is that, the prices we have seen circulating social media is false and who ever is behind it is not a serious person and should be brought to order. I'm not sure the SRC President has endorsed this propaganda. If he has, then it is a shame and an indictment on the General Assembly and the whole student body at large. It not accepted anywhere. Well, this also borders on the effectiveness of the General Assembly. As it stands now, I do not know and I'm sure many  do not know their GA representatives. Is the General Assembly dead or they have become old men and women with no teeth to bite?

As I clearly stated in the article I wrote on Campaign finance being a recipe for corruption, I still maintain a strong believe that there's no reasonable reason why students should pay exorbitant amounts just to purchase nomination forms. Kaman how? What is the rationale behind such prices. Every year, prices of forms keep increasing. Why? It is time not to only challenge the status quo but to change it. We came and met it that way doesn't mean we should continue in that direction. It would have been quite understandable, it we were still using the manual system, where ballot papers have to be printed and huge sums of monies have to be spent on other election materials but that is not the case. We are using the E-system. The benefits of using the E- system is to make things easier, faster and cheaper. So if prices are still going up with the E-sytem, then there's Something awfully wrong some where.

The information I'm also picking up from the ground indicates that the SRC will be holding a general meeting today, obviously to deliberate on some of these pertinent issues. I encourage all students who have interest in such matters though aren't G.A representatives to follow the due process and they would be allowed to participate in the deliberations. My ask is that the The G.A of SRC should follow the footsteps of the most vibrant association on campus (MELSSA), as in their last general meeting, they unanimously agreed to significantly slash the prices of their nomination forms even though forms where already sold ( so, monies will be refunded). There's nothing wrong if the prices of the forms are lower than last year's. Moreover, I believe the SRC has the resources to conduct these elections without charging a penny for nomination forms. My ask is that members of the General Assembly should do everything in their power to reduce significantly, the prices of these forms for the good of UDS Tamale campus.

I will end by saying as I said in my earlier publication that the huge sums of money we spend on election as students prepares the grounds for gargantuan corruption.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE: A RECIPE FOR CORRUPTION

The electoral commission of UDS Tamale campus has officially opened nominations for the various SRC/NUGS portfolios. It came with mixed feelings. Many are happy that finally, nominations have been opened. On the other hand, most students are outraged especially with regards to the cost of the nomination forms. I'm equally outraged and worried as well. Aren't you? . The issue of how campaigns are financed in UDS, in Ghana, Africa and the Word at large has always been a cause for concern. It is quite disturbing that students spend huge sums of money to attain the leadership of NUGS/SRC. WIKIPEDIA defines Campaign Finance as "all funds raised to promote candidates, political parties, or policy initiatives and referenda" The question that begs for answers needs serious attention is how these monies are accrued and how they are going to be refunded.
How are campaigns sponsored/financed on our campus? Obviously, personal income is the first point of call when you are thinking about funding your own campaign but it is worth noting that students take loans from friends and family and even to the extent of taking loans from banks to fund their campaigns. I have had the privilege of listening to past Executives of NUGS/SRC, I was astonished as they mentioned the amount of money they spent on their campaign trails. The question that boiled my brain was "how did you refund it"? I didn't ask though. It is so disturbing to think about. Mind you, these monies are actually refunded when they assume power. Which money is used to do the refunding? Me and you. That should tell that there's something seriously wrong with the system.

Let's come to the" How". How are these monies refunded? Obviously, through systemically  churning out inflated and ballooned budgets so that the extra monies will be diverted in to individual pockets or probably used to settle debts. True or false? That is a serious challenge we are facing in our electoral system. We can't completely blame them. Is the system.

Without mincing words, spending so much on campaigns prepares the grounds for gargantuan corruption. Monies spent has to be refunded. Not only the corruption, the expensive nature of the electoral process has a suffocating effect on democracy. What it actually means is that only a few can go for such positions though many  might have the will and vision to effect change but for  financial constraints, are not given the chance. Moreover, in a democratic setting, the size of your wallet should not determine the impact of your voice or your right to representation.

It will be useless to criticize without suggesting or finding solutions to this problem. How do you suggest this problem be solved? My suggestion; the system has to change. We need to have a paradigm shift. As a student, I wouldn't endorse door to door campaigns, I wouldn't endorse providing transportation for students to come for the election, I wouldn't endorse spending so much on posters and flyers because these are the very things that makes the campaigns so expensive. Cutting down on some of these things will actually help us a lot in terms of the monies we spend on campaigns. As I will always say, we have leaders but we lack leadership. There's a serious problem with UDS. From the Administration down to the security rooms, things are not working the way they should. There's a systemic failure. Things that are supposed to be done are not done and no one is held accountable. Sadly, student leaders do not have the balls to fight for the students body. Other than that, the electoral commission wouldn't have to charge so much for nomination forms. They would have been well established and financed to run elections without having to charge exorbitant fees.

Moving forward, perhaps we should consider paying the SRC Executives. I'm aware they are entitled to some allowances but as to whether it is sufficient, I can't tell. It is high time we stop this pretence. Though students leaders come with the aim of working, I'm not sure they are ready to do charity work not after spending so much to attain power. Perhaps a well structured allowance for them will help save huge sums of monies from vanishing like Castro did: without a trace.

Let's go Back

Lagfu Writes
Let's go Back

My Generation
We all about the money
We all about the club
And the club beer
Our purpose of life has become vague
We sit and while away the most precious commodity, Time
My heart aches, my heart burns and stomach burns
When I see the lawlessness
The disrespect and the insanity
I shudder to think, are we really the future?
Full of rich thieves and corrupt leaders
Our degrees becomes dread locks
Our dreams, dreaded In locks
Fathers are worshiping daughters
Mothers worshipping sons
The poor are ridiculed and deemed outcast
My heart aches for my Generation

Get drunk and get fucked
The youth are getting wasted
Truth has been murdered in broad day light
We hail the wrongs and are silent on the right
Dishonesty has become abundant like the blue skies
Hard work pays no more
Thievery and deceit takes the honors
My heart aches for my Generation

Where lies the solution?
Sankofa ; let's go back
Let's go back to the ancient words of the wise
Let's learn from the lessons of Nelson Mandela
Let's go back to the ancient words of our forefathers
Let's drink from the wisdom of Mahatma Gandhi
Let's go back to the 1957 speech of Nkrumah
He said: "We must change our attitudes and our minds"
Let's go back to the ancient words of the Holy Books
There lies the solutions
I hope there's hope for my generation
Let's go back; sankofa

"DON'T JUDGE ME BY MY APPEARANCE"

I have come across this statement several times especially on social media. The question that always come to mind is" kaman how"? Have you noticed? Anyone who uses this statement as a caption to a picture is either half naked or not properly dressed . I have never seen a man dressed in suit and tie or a lady dressed properly using this statement as a caption to his/her picture. Have you? I don't think so. Why? Dressing indecently does not necessarily make you a bad person. But society especially the African and Ghanaian society has strong reservations when it comes to dressing.   The importance of appearance and it's consequences and ramifications in society should not be underestimated. In as much as you do not want to be judged by how you appear, be rest assured that this statement ain't helping.
As uncomfortable as it may be, the truth is that our lives are under the microscope each and every day. Your appearance will always matter in society and will make impressions on whoever you come across. The saying "appearance can be deceptive" is a perfect testimony of the power of appearance. First impressions are important. Though the character of a person is not written on his/her appearance, nonetheless is it very significant in terms of the perceptions people will form. In most cases, people will not get the opportunity to know you well perhaps by talking with you, so the only information left for the mind to work with is your appearance. Human beings are instinctual. We form perceptions instinctively based on what we see. It is only the Almighty who has the power to see within us. Stop telling people not to judge you by your appearance. It is high time we stop this excuse. Let's accept the fact and deal with it. Appearance though deceptive is very important. A nun dressed like a prostitute will be addressed as such and the vice versa. No two ways about it. If you don't want to be addressed as a prostitute, don't dress as such.
On other hand, we shouldn't be too judgmental. With the knowledge of the fact that appearance is deceptive, we should leave room in our minds for adjustment of our perceptions. Let's give people the benefit of the doubt.
In this big data age and 21th century, where personalities are becoming brands, business and institutions, it very important and as a matter of urgency to be careful how we present ourselves to the public. Anytime we walk out minding our own businesses, we are indirectly marketing ourselves. The human being in the metaphysical sense is a "product". And as such product needs to be branded and well marketed. Your appearance is part of your brand. It is imperative to protect that brand. We will always be judged by our appearance. The importance of appearance cannot be downplayed. Why do we spend so much in trying to look presentable when going for an interview? It will be wise to take advantage of this status quo.
So any time you hear the statement "don't judge me by my appearance" The next question on your mind should be "kaman how"???

I'm an Activist

My pen is a microphone
It has a voice
It shouts
It screams
Let the world hear me
It speaks for the voiceless
It doesn't speak of new things
It speaks of the very things we are afraid to say
It ask questions and begs for understanding
It presents ideas and prepares the grounds for discussions
It doesn't really care about the similes and the metaphors
But the smiles and what it is meant for
Some times, it frightens me
Other times, it astonishes me
It writes for a purpose
My pen believes it can create change
And I believe my pen.
I guess you can call me an ACTIVIST!!

My Heart Beat

My heart beat
When I see you, my heart beats
I can not tell you how good it feels to look upon you with my own eyes
Your beauty makes me shy
I walk shoulders high with the knowledge of your love for me
The thought of you ignites smiles on my face
It was Love at first sight
As two hearts embraced
I really had the foresight
And proposed to you with all my might
Eyes so bright
Like a spark of light
She illuminates my path
I can no longer withhold,
But express my delight
Hmm, this love is  so right
Mr waiter set a table for two
With a chilled bottle of sobolo and a plate of chicken thighs
Don't forget to light the candles
My love, Tonight is for me and you
In our own little corner, you and I
and the moonlight
We swim in the deep oceans of love
After the dinner
I shall dine in your honey comb
I shall rub you in my hands like Shea Butter
Your lips, so wet and sweet
I shall lick it like aleewa
Your gentle touch, makes me vibrate
Chills runs down my spine
Hmm, today is the day
I shall enter the gated city of pleasure
I fell for her
She held me up
And gave me a seat in her heart
love soo deep
And the bond so strong
She is my world
Today I celebrate you
A lady of confidence
An embodiment of beauty
So innocent, yet so romantic
This love is new
Call me Obama, she is my Michelle.

DO YOUR BEST

My dreams scare me
They give me sleepless nights
Everyone has a motivation
Some are motivated by money
Others are motivated by the word "honey"
Some are motivated by respect
Others are motivated by women
I'm motivated by intelligent people.
I'm motivated by the smiles I see on faces
I'm motivated by the success of others and I'm motivated by the thought of a better society,
a better Country and a better world.
I dream of a new world
A world full of opportunities.
A world where goals can be achieved
A world where the rich remembers the poor
A world where rights are respected

Others too have done their part
Are you doing my part..?
Do your part.
Let's all do our part!!

The Launch Of The 8th SRC Week Celebration

This is arguably the best program I have attended on campus so far. I must not mince words but say a very big thank you to the SRC for such a wonderful program. A man who is quick to criticize, Should be quick to commend when the need arises else he becomes a hypocrite. I can say comfortably that I'm not a hypocrite.

Apart from the low turn out at beginning of the program, everything turned out great at the end. The MC was on point. I must confess, H. E DARY BAWA TAMINU, the SRC president of UDS_TlC has mastered the craft of speech delivery. His welcome address was superb and reassuring. It gave me a certain vibe that he might still be able to carry out at least some of the promises he made to student populace.

The theme "Forging a synergy with the cooperate world to curb graduate unemployment" couldn't have been better especially at this particular point in time where the cry of every discerning graduate is how to get employed. Prof Agnes Apusigah, the Dean of Faculty of Education did justice to the subject matter of theme. She provided extensive knowledge on how this synergy could be forged. She stated quite clearly that the Cooperate world yearns for creativity and innovativeness. Competition has become the normal in today's global world. So it is imperative for the individual to add value to what ever qualification he/she has. Read wide, broaden your horizon. Do not only read materials concerning your profession or field of study. She added.  I enjoyed every bit of her presentation. Her presentation was so insightful and inspirational. May the Almighty bless her with more knowledge and a long life. More grease to her elbows.

One of my favorite moments of the program was the cultural performance and the  poetry recital. As an indigen of Dagbon, I got goose bumps as I watched the cultural performance. I began to tap my feet. In fact, I almost got up to join the dance but for the formal nature of the program, I had to keep my cool. It was a marvelous sight to behold.

To the poetry recital: to be honest, I can't coin words to describe the feeling I had. I don't know whether I should called it an ecstasy or an intellectual orgasm. There's something about poetry, it not just about the words but the emotions behind those words. The meticulousness involved in beautifully crafting words, amazingly  interweaving and interlacing words to make meaning. When they opened their mouths, words filed out like ants in forms and formations, they crafted beautiful sentences that carried powerful messages and ignited smiles on the faces of many. I was just beaming with smiles. I have succeeded in writing a number poems myself but I haven't developed the skill and tactfulness of reciting them. IM SAANI and MALIK, thanks for your beautiful poetry recital.  I bow to you. You made my day!

In a recap, if you didn't make it to the launch of the 8th SRC week celebration for no other important reason, "you have done yourself". I mean you, you have lost. As the MC said "we paid for it" This particular program was intellectually stimulating. Thank you SRC.

RE; MY THOUGHTS ON THE SRC WEEK CELEBRATION

I aired my views and concerns on the SRC week celebration. Apparently I didn't have all the facts. I met a senior member as I was about to  step into the ICT auditorium for the launch of the week long celebration. Indeed, he had read my earlier publication and took the initiative to explain certain things to me. He wanted to address the concern I raised about the week celebration going on while lectures are also going on. He stated clearly that during the administration of Former SRC president Raphael (2014/15 academic year), a whole week was declared lecture free for the SRC week  celebrations.
As expected, the biggest problem in UDS prevailed. Apathy was the order of the day. Even without lectures, students didn't show up for programs. It became a vacation for others, they quickly packed their things and went home. He explained. So even with no other engagement, there was a wanton display of lack of interest in the SRC week celebration.  So building on that premise, it is logically not sound  to give another lecture free week for an SRC week celebration because history has the tendency of repeating it self.  In a nutshell, It is our own attitudes that has brought as here. Until we realise that the GPA has limits, this our attitudes might never change. You have to decide and be committed to programs that will help in your overall development. I believe that there's more to life in the University than the lecture room. I have made up my mind to attend all the important seminars organized. So should you.

I work with information at my disposal. If I had this info earlier on, the concerns I raised in my earlier write up would have been different.
Dr SEIDU FITER, I'm grateful for your input.

My Thoughts On The SRC Week Celebration

Without equivocation, the program line up looks very comprehensive. It is actually what an SRC celebration should be about: both educative and very entertaining, a blend of culture and our traditions, a dose of philanthropy, sporting activities and a climax with thanksgiving (the God factor). Almost all aspects of students life has been factored into the program line up. Whether Muslim, Christian or A Traditionalist, no one has been left out. I'm particularly happy about the fact that some of the events will be hosted by The Faculty of Education. This makes this particular SRC week celebration unique. I must say kudos in advance to the SRC and all those involved in the organization of the SRC week celebration. The program line up looks good on paper but as to whether things will be done well on the D-days, is another issue for my pen.

On the other hand, it is very disappointing to realize that some students will not be able to to enjoy this wonderful program line up. Two days for a week long celebration? Kaman how? I don't know how things are done at the top but this certainly does not make sense to me: be at lectures while programs organized for you are going waste. It beats my imagination. Going forward, something has to be done about this particular issue. Abaaa!! So much pressure in the lecture room, we shouldn't even relax?
Huh!!

Another issue worth mentioning: the artistes on the bill. I wonder the consultations the SRC did before arriving on those artistes. How can you put two rappers on a bill? When was the last time Yaa Pono produced  a hit track? After singing to his Amen ooo Amen, what else? Now to Maccasio, after dancing to his 69 fans and Koomi Naachiki, what else. How can you bring such a pair to entertain us? Is it a rap battle? The most annoying part is that it is even a day program. I hate day programs (I'm nocturnal, lol). I'm not an entertainment expert but I wouldn't put up such a program. It is as if the SRC has sworn an oath to always disappoint us. Nnabi SRC, so far, so bad!!! I just hope the budget for this week celebration is not the inflated and ballooned type!!

Thank You!!

The Election Series

As we journey through this trimester, the second most important happening will be the SRC/NUGS elections and perhaps the Departmental Elections. Obviously, academics is always  the number one priority. To this end, it is of utmost importance we know the nuts and bolts of this particular elections. More to the point, a friend queried some time ago whether the Electoral Commission had the power to sanction a certain aspirant for premature/early campaign.  I said answered  in the affirmative and explained certain things to her as contained in the SRC constitution. It dawned on me that not all students have access to the SRC constitution.  In fact, many students do not even know that we have a document called THE SRC CONSTITUTION on campus. It is quite unfortunate and a pity that students do not have access to the very document that is being used to govern them. Fortunately, I'm part of the lucky few who have access to the SRC constitution.

The Election Series is going to be an avenue where excerpts from the Constitution (those sections of the Constitution that talks about the elections) will be shared and probably discussed. The body mandated to conduct elections on campus always been the Electoral Commission but as to how the process is going to be is unknown to many students. The Election Series is meant to bridge this gap. We shall discuss the Electoral Commission, who qualifies to contest, the voting process and all that concerns this election.

Perhaps if students know the nitty-gritties of the election, they would show more concern. I see an era where students will not wait for aspirants to provide transport for them to go and vote, an era where students will not sell their votes  and an era where the interest in elections will be so intense that there will be no need for door to door campaigns. My target audience are those who do not have access to the SRC constitution and those who find it difficult to read things printed on paper (Nnabi, there are people like ooo. Lol)

Hope to get the participation of all students. The Election Series will be published on some specific dates which will be communicated soon. I have senior members who will provide clarifications to any questions you might have.
All hands on deck!!
Thank you!!!

My first F

My biggest fear as a student is an F or a trail. In fact, that is my prayers on Fridays - that the Almighty should build a very huge wall between me and F. I don't just want to be associated in any way with an F. Just thinking about it Catapults me into a state of frustration and hypoglycemia. Truth be told, there's a difference between fantasy and reality, a difference between what we want and what we will get and to some extent, an uncertainty as to whether our prayers are actually being answered. My first F as a student in the University came to me as a gargantuan shock. Sometimes students deserve an F but others are just "Fd" (past tense of F) by the system - I don't know where I belonged. Nnabi, all I can say is that my heart left me. Words can't actually be used to express this particular feeling but let me try. It was devastating, I had just finished preparing a very delicious jollof rice but immediately lost my appetite after taking a look at my results. The distance between me and a smile was like from Ghana to China. I couldn't even feign it. The world is wicked ooo. Just a certain letter attached to a certain index number under a certain course code can drive a person into a state of discombobulation and depression. I suddenly became a question bank. Questions started running through my mind like Usain Bolt. How? Kaman how? How did I succeed in failing? What does it mean to trail a course? How come I trailed? It is that I didn't learn? Where the questions so difficult? Or did the lecturer intentionally trail me? But wait, how come some people passed ? A network of questions running through my mind.  The most depressing part of this is that some people had 'A's. Does this mean I'm a dunderhead? After attending all the lectures, my F was still assured. Hmmm!! Trailing in my first official exam was not a joke.

With all these happening in my head, I knew I had to move on. I knew I had to find a better response to this devastating stimulus I had just been subjected to. I had to find something to hold on to. I had flashbacks of how I studied and prepared for that particular paper. It was almost as if I left no stone unturned but still things didn't turn out well. I began to calm down. I did my best and besides there was nothing I could do at that particular moment to change the results. I had interactions with my senior colleagues. In an attempt to calm me down, they told stories of  their Fs. Apparently, it is normal to trail but nonetheless it was my first F. I subjected myself to a serious meditation, trying to find inspiration and motivation. I remembered His Royal Intelligence, Albert Einstein once failed a certain mathematics paper. Thomas Edison failed on several attempts but finally succeeded in inventing the light bulb. Then I realized that the only way we can defeat failure is to see it as an integral part of success. So that any time we face any kind of failure, we know that success is an extra effort away. There's always a second chance. I just had to take advantage of the re-sit. My first F became my fuel, it became the driving force behind my persistent determination to succeed. Sometimes we just have to make comedy out of our tragedies. Failure is not final. Is a marathon not a sprint finish hard!!!

The biggest problem in UDS

What is the biggest problem in UDS? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Yes! I have and have also asked so many people this same question. Of course, I have gotten so many different views encompassing all aspects of student life on campus. Unfortunately, my answer to this question is quite different from all the views I have sampled. On a class whatsapp platform of about a hundred and twenty students, I asked this same question and only three students gave a response--this is indicative of the biggest problem in UDS. The SRC organizes a summit on Leadership and out of the thousands of students on campus, only a handful attends--this is indicative of the biggest problem in UDS. If you were asked  represent problems students face on a pie chart, which problem would take the largest portion?

Indeed, students on campus faces a myriad of problems. Problems that has to  do with academics, sanitation, security, how we are governed and so on. But I will state emphatically that, the biggest problem in UDS is not the fact we do not have adequate lecture rooms, it is not the fact the fans in our lecture rooms are not working, it not the fact that the air conditioners in our lectures rooms have become white elephants, it is not the fact that our security men do not have name tags, it is not the fact that a security man can shout on you and will forget your index number,  it is not the fact that some lecturers are just intentionally wicked, it is not the fact medlab students have to carry stools up and down when ever they go for lectures at the lab and it is not the fact the system is made to trail some students for no reasonable reason. So what then is the fact? .......The fact,  the biggest problem in UDS is that we are not willing as students to do anything about all these problems. Our lackadaisical attitudes, our lack of concern and our high sense of "I don't careism" towards issues of importance is our biggest problem. We are not willing to do anything about the fact that a person can suffer ear defect/impairment just by attending lectures at lecture room1 because of the bad state of the P. A systems. We don't care about the fact that we are unable to enjoy a steady Internet connectivity due to an unending fluctuations in our WiFi system and the fact that most of the Internet cable ports (for the sake of Lack of a   better term) are in dysfunction. We fold our arms and complain to ourselves. The only thing we do is to grumble amongst ourselves, no one is ready to speak out. What a pity!!

One might ask -what has the SRC (in this context, when I say SRC, I mean the Executives) done in this regard? The truth is that, the SRC Executives are the beneficiaries of the biggest problem in UDS. They have capitalized and are successfully thriving on this problem. How many students care about the amount of money spent on SRC week celebrations? And if no one cares, who benefits? So there seems to be no reason why SRC will try to solve this problem. It will be like creating a hole in their own pockets . In a nutshell, the biggest problem in UDS is APATHY : the lack of interest and concern in important matters especially in relation to how we are governed and treated as students.

The solution to this problem is not farfetched. The solution is a collective responsibility of the whole student body. An active campaign against apathy. Developing interest in other important matters apart from academics. It is a known fact that the first priority of every student is to excel academically but mind you, GPA has its limitations. We can develop interest and participate in issues that has to do with how we are governed without neglecting our academics - it is possible. The solution lies in our hands. Let's say no to apathy. Let's hold our leaders accountable. It is our duty.
I hope you are nodding in agreement?

Dead Dreams

Born into an unfair world
Hello!!! World
Man cries to the new world
Full of hope, full of ideas
Full of plans, he walks the earth with optimism
He dreams of a better job
He dreams of a mansion,
And his pension
He dreams of a beautiful wife
And a better world

But all of a sudden
Time is running out to
Hope becomes hopeless
Faith becomes fake
Dreams and plans become vague
What happened? How did he get here?
Please hear me
Bad choices and bad company
Inaction and complacency
Procrastination has really stolen the time
Confusion and desperation sets in
His dream of a better world is now shuttered
He becomes grumpy, he becomes sad

What else can he do?
He gangs up with his fellas
They sit under shady trees
Their only priority becomes winning that game of oware
A cedi for a calabash of pito becomes the budget for the day
He finds solace in abusing cola nuts
Teeth becomes tainted

Hey hey hey!!
While the sun shines make hay!
Under shady trees, they sit
Having a lonely drink
In memory of their hopes and dreams
That are now dead and buried
Now I know, dreams have a lifespan
They do not span a life time.
Live your dreams,
dreams have a life span.

Let's move on

Yes, there are certain lines in H. E Nana Addo's inaugural speech that has been plagiarised. Writers of the speech have come out to offer the nation an apology, stating clearly that it was an oversight. The speech has not even been submitted for any academic purpose. These vilifications, incessant brouhaha and hullabaloos are expected. In fact, it will incompetent on the part of the opposition not to aggrandize and blow this issue out of proportion. But as well meaning Ghanaians let's look beyond this issue of plagiarism and concentrate on the substance of the message his H E Nana Addo wanted to send. Mind you, as is stands now, Ghana has a high illiteracy rate. What that means is that a significant number of Ghanaians do not even understand what plagiarism means. Plagiarism has no meaning to the old lady at "Babatikuma" (a remote village) who sells dawadawa, the market women and the peasant farmers. All what these people are concerned with is bread and butter. OK now, the president gave a plagiarised speech, so that it mean that at the end of the month salaries will not be paid? Roads will not be constructed ? The allowance will not be restored? Development will come to a standstill? Ahbaaa!! Enough.
Let's move on.

The Hard Truth

Welcome to UDS. It is now clear that whether the EC likes it or not the campaign has began. It is almost time for our elections and as usual the word "writer"  has become synonymous with "aspirant". Wow, I  never knew we had such great writers on campus. Who I'm I kidding? For the sake of lack of a better term, let's call them the "copy and paste"  writers. So interesting, some are telling stories, some have become motivational writers and others have become news agencies. Lol.

This is one utterly amazing development I enjoy most anytime we are approaching SRC elections. So much useful information, so many inspiring messages circulating our whatsapp platforms.  I must admit and those who taken time to read these messages will  also attest to the fact that these messages are actually very useful and there is so much to learn from them. But why now? The obvious answer to this question is :  elections are coming up, the campaign has started, students want to make their names popular. Really? So you do this by ascribing your names to write-ups that do not belong to you? That is  not even my problem.

Are these messages only useful to students when we are approaching elections? —this is my problem. I will state emphatically without fear or any shred of trepidation that this is HYPOCRISY of the highest pinnacle. You do not care whether the information you provide benefits the students, as long as your name is is written at top or bottom of the write-up, you are okay. What kind of hypocrisy is that? What kind of pretentious behavior is this? Anyone at of whatever reason(s) decides to contest for a position suddenly becomes a writer. kaman how? They begin to terrorize us with messages. It beats my imagination.  For your information, no matter how viral your messages have gone on whatsapp, no matter the number of thumbs-up or likes you get on your "copy and paste" posts, don't be deceived. We shall not endorse any kind mediocrity. We have learnt from history, empty barrels makes the most noise especially in UDS_TLC. Enough is enough. Enough of this brouhaha!!
I HAVE MADE MY CASE!!

I'm back

"I'm back"

They hail the wrongs
Even sing songs
To praise the rots
I can't fight
Coz I'm not strong
So I sent my pen to the gym
It is now strong

Give me pen, Give me paper
No more dulling, no more later
Words getting thicker
Brace yourselves
I'm about to rain on them
I don't have to be judgmental
But can't I be instrumental?
I was on a truce
Now I'm back
..........................................

A new Dawn

A new dawn
Has dawn on us
I woke up to the dawn
Of a new dawn
The beginning of an era
That is a beacon of inspiration

Change has come
May it increase our income
We sit and wait
To see those promises
Turned into prosperity
So we can own more properties
Expectations are so high
Now we can relax
And take some sobolo
With chicken thighs
I hope they don't forget our rights

With the memories
Of the histories of frustrations
And of the painful stories
Behind us
We Forge a new image
Image of smiles and image of hope
Image of jobs and image of development
Image of a better health care delivery system
We Forge a more United nation

With the pains of the past behind us
We forgive
And welcome the rebirth of a nation
A nation of possibilities
A nation full of inspiration
And Full of opportunities
Atleast, I pray so

They inspired
And got hired
The others conspired
And got fired
With the voice of the thumb
The people spoke
Onaapo!!!
Change has come
God bless our home land Ghana.

When I write

When I write
They begin to wonder
Please don't bother
I need you to ponder
Ideas running through my mind
My pen begins to quiver
Like a river
Words begins to flow
Floyd Mayweather
It sometimes gives a blow
DKB, sometimes it's like a comedy
Like sexual intercourse
Writing gives me ecstasy
I'm I being excessive
Is it better being recessive
I have no choice
Issues keeps writing
OK ok ok sorry
Please don't worry
I don't need to rhyme
I just want to write
Is it a crime
Where's my pen cover
I'm done.

My pen

"my pen"

My pen has a PhD
Always writing thesis
And some teases
To tease society
And to speak the reality
Realities my mouth can't speak
My pen is not shy but respectful
Now you know my intention
So give me some attention
I'm about to cause some tension

I have a factory of rhymes
Full of punchlines
My words are bold, no need to underline
So sophisticated, I use nets
No more fishing lines
No time for nonsense
Go check my time line
Give me pen, give me paper
And I will beat the deadline
like Usain Bolt, meet at the finish line

My Dearest

My dearest
Forget the rest
And take a rest
My love for you is the best
Let's go to the west
On a quest
To Budapest
Your love for me will surely manifest

You are my pride
So be my bride
Be by my side
Besides
I will never backslide

I've seen my father
Let's go see your mother
C'mon don't be shy
I will buy you the sky
Do you prefer the moon?
Then I will take a loan
From Banki Moon

OK stop
Put on that top
Let's go to the shop
I want to buy you a golden ring
Champagne will be our drink
Our wedding will be in the Bahamas
Our chefs will be the Obamas
Please be my baby mama
